Prompted by the desire to see Field of Light, an artwork by Bruce Munro, we drove up north to San Luis Obispo (SLO) for a weekend trip. SLO is located in coastal Central California and is a great day trip and weekend getaway choice for Californians. If you are planning a road trip for highway 1, I would recommend adding SLO to one of your stopping points.
Here’s our weekend itinerary. What’s yours?
Day1, 12:00 pm lunch at Santa Barbara shellfish company
Adjust your morning schedule to arrive before noon to avoid the lunch rush. The pier has free parking for first 90 mins and $2.5/hr after that. We got Box Crab and live lobster( pictures below), both are must get 😋They are been boiled first and grilled afterwards. It’s super hot when served, so be careful!
3pm Wine tasting at Wolff Vineyards
Wine tasting should be on everyone’s must do list when visiting SLO. The region has more than 250 wineries and more than 100 tasting room. We tried five different reds (menu pictured below ) at Wolff Vineyards. Besides the tasting room, they also have an outdoor seating area. Feel free to bring your own food (cheese, fruit, nuts and etc) to pair with wine. We saw some guests doing that and thought it’s a great idea!
5pm Chilling at Pismo beach
Plan beach activities in the afternoon when visiting this region since it tends to be overcast in the morning. If you have some room before dinner, don’t forget to get a cup of the famous clam chowder at Splash😋
6:30pm Dinner at Branzino
Branzino is Spanish and Californian inspired cuisine. I highly recommend making reservation beforehand if you want to be seated at a table. We had a whole Branzino for two served with whipped potato and cauliflower as sides.
8pm Field of light at Sensorio
The main star of this trip: Field of Light by Bruce Munro. The artwork consists of 58,000 lights over 15 acres of field. It’s truly magical and certainly insta-worthy.
Here’s some tips I have for your visit 🙂
- Come a little early before sunset to catch the golden glow as your background.
- While tripod is prohibited, you can still bring your camera (DSLRs) inside.
- Water bottles are not allowed, so leave them in your car. The site does provide drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and live music.
Day2, 8am breakfast at Goddess Goods
Goddess Goods is located right beside Morro Rock. We got berry bowl there since we stayed nearby the night before. It’s a great choice if you are looking for light breakfast, plus you get a nice view of the rock 🙂
12pm lunch at Maple Block Meat Co.
We were there just in time during dineLA week, so we tried their restaurant week lunch menu, and brisket is our favorite. Since we made dinner plans that day, we headed straight back to SD after lunch. However, if you have some free time, pay a visit to MODS museum, the first digital museum in the US.
5pm dinner at Sushi Ota
Sushi Ota is one of the best sushi restaurant in San Diego and is a perfect way to end our trip 🙂
